Behavioral Science Literacy is about understanding and applying insights from behavioral science to drive meaningful change within L&D. At its core, it involves familiarity with the main theories of behavior change, such as COM-B (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation-Behavior), BJ Fogg's Behavior Model, the Theory of Planned Behavior, and Self-Determination Theory. These frameworks help explain why people act the way they do and provide practical guidance for influencing behavior effectively. This knowledge forms the foundation for designing impactful learning interventions.
A key part of this skill is the ability to identify and describe behaviors clearly. This includes analyzing current behaviors, defining desired outcomes, and understanding the gap between them. By pinpointing the factors influencing behavior—whether personal, social, or environmental—L&D professionals can craft more precise and targeted interventions that address root causes.
Finally, Behavioral Science Literacy involves applying a wide range of behavior change solutions. These might include habit formation techniques, nudging strategies, motivational incentives, social reinforcement, or structural adjustments to the environment.
